ASUS P5W DH Hangs on Vista Install

I ran into some more computer troubles recently. While installing Vista, I would get this nasty problem of the computer hanging when the process got to the screen with the scrolling loading bar. I ended up trying a different video card, monitor, and RAM, to no avail. Installing through safe mode created the same problem, except I got a better picture of what was happening. The install was locking up at disk.sys.

Some searching through the internet (mostly web forums) brought me to this site. So after a first 5 pages of yadda, yadda, I hit the jackpot. It seems like some versions of the P5W DH Deluxe BIOS doesn’t play very nicely with Vista. So flashing to the latest version (1707) solved my problems and Vista installed normally.

Just a heads up to anyone else having the same problem. Hopefully this’ll save you a bit of searching.

  1. thx a lot for your blog entry 😀
tried the last few hours to install my fresh vista ultimate.

will try the flash and hope it will work.

    so long
    nice weekend

  2. you saved my evening yesterday 😉
got my ultimate yesterday and tried to install on my pc. same problem.
after reading your blog and flashing my bios everthing went fine

  3. During the betas and RCs, they ran fine on my MSI k8n/x2 4800 based systems, but never on my p5w dh/e6600. Now that is holding true with the shipping versions.

No matter what I do, I cannot install as of yet. The p5w dh has the 1707 bios, and I even tried the 1801 beta. I have tried single sticks of ram, disconnected peripherals, removed the OC, etc. Nothing. It just hangs at the aurora borealis-like screen with a pointer.

    System specs:

    p5w dh
    Corsair pc8500
    evga 8800 GTX

Just hold on. It will eventually move on. I had the same problem but I just sat there and thinking of what it could be, and just like that it continued with the install. However it stops later on due to problem vista not detecting SATA2 disks.

  5. Thanks for that link, I had the exact same problem on my computer, I was considering updating the bios, but couldn’t really be bothered!.

Also, on a random note, I’m not sure how I got here, I think it was through the theme editor (if so, thanks for the great theme 🙂 )

  6. Yeah, I originally had that problem with Vista hanging on that install wallpaper screen, but eventually it’ll go through. You’ll probably think the install died, but it hasn’t.

I’m not sure why you’d have a problem at the CD key page XST. Any more details?

And Lee, I’d suggest downloading the ASUS Update program from their site (or install off the driver CD). I used that to upgrade the BIOS cause I don’t have a floppy drive and couldn’t be bothered to create a boot CD. It’s really quite simple to do.
