Some HD Action

Ohhhh I have this love/hate relationship with HDTV content. First and foremost, it’s amazing in its clarity. Like after you watch a few shows in high resolution, your standard DVD quality stuff is just plain awful looking. On the other hand, these hard drives are just too small to hold any meaningful amount of HD content. It’s quite sad really. Your typical season of a 40-odd-minute-per-episode TV show would fill up about 100GBs. That’s a lot of storage.

I’ve started to acquire more and more shows in HD recently and it’s really putting a strain on my storage space, not to mention this damn bandwidth cap Rogers enforces… I mean 60GB/month? Come on, I could blow through that in a good week. It looks like I’ll be needing to pick up a few more hard drives and a new internet connection come the New Year. I wonder what we’ll end up going with in Waterloo? (probably Rogers… :|)

But enough of that, my high-rez Smallville episode awaits me. 😀

Snap, House, Snap!

Just finished watching last night’s episode of House. After several weeks on hiatus (something to do with baseball playoffs….) House is back on the air and better than ever. This past episode: !!!!! AHHHH!!!! That just isn’t supposed to happen. Like, WTF?! What’s going to happen next? I dunno! Come on next Tuesday. It won’t come soon enough.

OMG Amazing

Drop anything you’re doing and go watch The Office Season 3 Episode 3. Un-effing-believable. I cannot believe how good this show is. I smile when I watch comedies at the funny parts, but I actually laughed out loud when I watched that episode.

Seriously. It was an amazing episode. Especially for anyone who watches Entourage. Just… I can’t describe it. I’m speechless.

Edit: I just found the YouTube links. Go watch the episode now. I don’t feel like uploading it. 😛 Watch it now now now.

Fall of Summer

I think I’ve nailed down the date for some upcoming computer parts purchases. October 17th. That’s the date (rumoured) that ATI will be launching their X1950 Pro and it looks to be THE card for me to tide me over until the second generation Direct3D 10 parts arrive. I’ve put off this purchase for far too long already and at this rate, I’ll be getting my computer next year… RAM prices have been skyrocketing over the past few weeks so I’m going out tomorrow to grab the last pack of RAM that I could find at the low prices still. I definitely didn’t see this coming when I budgeted the computer a couple months ago.

It’s already officially fall and I can definitely feel it in the air. It was actually decently warm here today, but the past week has been relatively freezing. The nights and early mornings have dropped down to 7-10C and I think it’ll soon be time to upgrade the jacket. I’m definitely not looking forward to the snow that bound to come in a couple months. It seems like so recently that I was braving absolutely frigid temperatures during my co-op term in Waterloo.

I recently got my class ranking for the past semester. My goal was top 10 after I got my 16th rank last semester, but as the semester progressed, I had a feeling that wasn’t to be. As luck would have it, I just sneaked in at good ol’ number 10 out of 123. Seems like we lost about 20 people this semester. As well, I found out today that I’m actually on the Dean’s Honours list. That was quite surprising, considering my absolute mark wasn’t that good. Overall I’m a happy camper. Now, how shall I reward myself? 😛 Not too bad for an Islander eh? /end bragging mode…

Just prior to writing this post, I watched the season premier of The Office (US version). Phenomenal. Absolutely phenomenal. The only bad thing about it is that I have to wait until next week to watch it… There’s something good about having multiple seasons saved up and watching it all in a row. It’s that instant gratification to know that you can watch episode after episode all in a row. It does prove to be detrimental to a person’s sleep regime though…

Okay, that’s all I’ll write for now. For some odd reason, Firefox has been acting up all day today, crashing all over the place and I’m a little scared it’s going to crash and erase everything I’ve written…

Ahhhh, yes, the new John Mayer album that was released this past Tuesday I believe. I’m listening to it right now as I write this post. Actually I’m not even done listening to it once yet. The current song is ‘Gravity’. Actually, I remembered that I should get this album after watching the last episode of House. Mmmmm, I’m so glad that show is back again. It really didn’t seem that long ago that I was watching the season finale. That’s probably because university siphoned all my time. Oh well.

Well, I haven’t written anything in quite a while again. That’s mostly due to The Office though. No, not my work office. I’m talking about the TV show. Several friends were watching it over the past summer semester, but for some reason, I never got hooked like they did. It seemed too cheesy and lame for my tastes. This past weekend, I watched a couple episodes, right from the start and it really piqued my interest. So over the past 4 days, I finished up the first and second seasons. Needless to say, that’s a lot of TV watching. I can’t wait until next Thursday for the season 3 premier. I can’t believe how they left off in season 2!!!

This Continuum album is definitely lighter (so far at least) compared to some of the previous albums. He definitely has a different style of guitar playing in this album. It’s a little more… adventurous? Is that a good way of putting it?

Speaking of continuation, one of my most dreaded moments occurred this past week. I got an email from the PDEng 25 course. If you read my blog during the last co-op semester, you’ll have already heard me speak my mind about the course. If not, well, do a search for PDEng on this blog and you’ll find lots to read. 🙂 I’m sure it’s going to be the same BS this time around. From what I heard from last semester, PDEng 25 is like PDEng 15 on steroids. That means more time required to complete the assignments and even more BS. Really, they’re not setting up a good image of what the Professional Engineer is. Currently, if I had only these PDEng courses to base my opinion on, I would think engineering is about how little can you actually know and still produce a passable project.

I’m currently attempting to multitask between writing this entry, scrutinizing the new songs and working on the first module in PDEng. I have a feeling in the end none of the three are going to be finished with any sort of quality.

The first and actually the main project of this co-op semester was finally started this past week. Actually it was started late last week, but my supervisor was gone this week, so the other co-op and myself have been trudging through the details of the project on our own, with some guidance from a different director. We’re doing all we can without knowing the finer details that only our supervisor can provide. But at this point, I already know that we’re going to be meeting with all the product managers. These people are busy as hell and it’s extremely difficult to try and book a meeting with them. I’m pretty excited about the project though. We laid out a plan and I wrote it up. It looks pretty pro actually. I think the end product could be extremely useful to the whole department. I won’t bore you with the details, although I did read a 100 page research paper on mobile messaging and am in the middle of a 250 page research paper on wireless data trends. How fun. 🙂

Okay, it’s really time to get cracking at this PDEng assignment. This weekend is supposed to be really nice (weather-wise). It may just about be the last hurrah for summer. It’s supposed to be sunny and 25C+ so I’m sure I won’t want to sit inside and work on this crap. I know I’m forgetting to write about something I had on my mind, but that’s okay. Perhaps I can write about it tomorrow if I remember. These updates are getting really too sporadic for my liking.

Oh one more thing…. (the Apple launch was sorely disappointing in my opinion, but that’s not the one more thing) I’m ending this post with the song Bold As Love. The album doesn’t seem too bad. I haven’t paid too much attention to it, but at least nothing was so horrible that it caught my attention. Then again, with that said, nothing awesome has caught it either.
