Sony Ericsson K790 Internal Memory Corrupted

So I believe I’ve found the root cause of all of these problems with my K790a. The internal memory is corrupt. It all makes sense now, first the corrupt text message, the random disappearance of all my messages, and then messed up wallpaper. More recently, pictures I’ve taken with the camera have become corrupt and I now get an error that says, “Errors occur in the menu.ml file. This may render the menu unusable.” It is indeed unusable, there are many menus that are no longer accessible; they just don’t show up. I was going to attempt a Master Reset, but I can no longer access any of the menus under Settings.

K790 Error

To top it all off, I lost what text messages I had accumulated from the previous surprise deletion. Oh brother.

I’m going to see if there are any firmware updates available for the device. If that doesn’t solve the problem, Sony Ericsson will be getting a call from me within the week. What started off as a problem with the navigation stick really seems to have snowballed quickly. Anyone else having problems with their K790/K800 or is it just my poor luck?

Update: I see that there are quite a few people who are reaching this page from search engines, presumably with the same problems with the K790/K800 as I’ve been having. Key searches have been errors with the menu.ml file and corrupted files in the phone. I’d like you point you over to this post, where I’ve detailed the fact that I was able to resolve the problem (at least for now) by flashing it with the latest firmware from Sony Ericsson. Hopefully this helps people who were as frustrated as I was.

  1. Yeh I’m going through this right now – my K800 failed spectacularly when it rebooted whilst connected to my PC via a USB lead. That made it look as though most of the files were missing and messed up the characters generally displayed on the phone.

After getting it ‘repaired’ by my phone company it all looked OK for a few days but then I started getting the corrupt messages, I can’t launch any Java apps as it says there’s no room on the internal memory (despite there being loads) and now it won’t boot up properly any more.

    Dead phone!

  2. If you are able to boot it up properly, I’d suggest attempting to flash the firmware of the phone if you haven’t already done so. That seemed to have fixed my problems. (Aside from the navigation stick obviously.)

  3. I have a Sony Ericsson K790 – I don’t know what posessed me because I had one before which went through the same internal memory problem that you describe above and I never managed to get fixed but I was persuaded that it was one-off and replaced it myself (I am a pay-as-you-go customer and so second-class phone citizen). Anyway my new K790 has behaved quite well until suddenly it won’t send text messages. They get transferred into the out box and then just sit there queuing until I give up and delete them. I thought I might find an answer to this on the web but only found your comment so wondered if you have any advice…

  4. I have a Sony Ericsson w880i. I’ve had it replaced 5 times now since my contract began a year ago. I’ve begged Orange for a downgrade, but they will only replace like for like. Most of them have just frozen, or have had an infuriating delay (like up to 15 seconds) on the buttons or the screen has just gone white and then they’ve died. I’ve just received 3 corrupt text messages on my most recent and now the menu won’t work. I give up. I’m going back to Nokia.
