Alright. I think it’s time for the one week update. I’ve had four days of real work and a day of orientation at Microsoft, and things are settling in nicely. I’ve been given my responsibilities (and they’re going to be fun, to say the least!), become reacquainted with the team and am preparing to write real commitments for the upcoming fiscal year. Genuinely, I’m very excited about this next year. I think the products coming out of the company will make a dent in the marketplace. Of course, getting a free Windows Phone is pretty cool too.
I’ve moved into an apartment, completely unfurnished, which has been a change from my university experiences. Household goods have never been on my radar much, so buying pots and pans, furniture, cleaning supplies and so forth is a bit foreign to me. It’s been interesting finding out approximately what that something should cost. Yeah, this is the real world. University life has been so sheltered in comparison.
And I think that’s the one thing that I’m beginning to discover. I’m now fully independent; everything that needs to be done, I do myself. I now chart my own life and decide the wisest choice of action. It’s intimidating and there’s no ramp. It’s just a big wall I have to climb.
But it’s an awesome wall and it will slowly become smaller and less of a crazy obstacle
I’ve been here for over 5 months now and life just pretty much is now. It’s so strange and I’m still adjusting, but I have a feeling I will be for awhile yet. Good luck, it’s a good wall!

Thanks you two. I had my first one on one with my lead today, and I’m feeling better already. I think I need to switch over from intern mentality to full-time mentality. I was especially put at ease by one of his comments – we want you to live your life the way you want to. I don’t need to bend myself backwards for the company and I don’t need to bend myself backwards to accommodate anyone else.
Yeah, you went from 0-100 in a few short weeks…me, I’m easing into with a boring job and plans of more schooling in the near future. I’ll second the above thoughts though as I’m sure you’ll be more than fine. How is winphone7 treating you ?

Found your blog while researching the Nikon D40. From your writing it seems like I have stumbled upon a reflected, young man (I think, but then again, Charlie can be a girl too!!). A few words regarding working for a market leader. 1) Do not underestimate the power of the brand. 2) Stay at it for at least 4 years. 3) Add as much as you can to your personal brand as a MS employee. You will reap 10 fold once you are ready to move on. And as far as “nobody know…”, I am amazed that you have already figured it out
It is one of the best kept secrets of the professional world.
