NOT just another WordPress weblog. What were they thinking when they came up with that tagline anyways?

I have the 17-50mm as well, and mine seems to have the front focus problem. Did you manage to get yours fixed? Did it take a long time? Where did you have to send it in to?

Haven't had a chance to send it in yet. I'm making do with it for the moment. Further reading on the subject seems to indicate the first version without the in-lens motor performs much better from an focus point of view.

I figure if it was the camera front-focusing, even when manual focusing and the focused 'dot' appears for the 50mm prime, it should be slightly out of focus, but it isn't.

Hence, I believe it to be the lens. As for aperture, the front-focusing much less obvious with a smaller aperture, but I think that has more to do with the fact that the DoF is larger, thus reducing the effect of the front-focus, not eliminating it.

And one more thing, I heard that the front focus issue only appears with max aperture. Maybe it doesn't happen with smaller aperture.

I meant that if D40 cannot autofocus on 50 f/1.8, how comes you knew that it does not have that issue.

The D40 doesn't have any focus micro-adjustment capabilities like the D300 and above so there's little possibility of fixing the issue without getting it calibrated. You could see if the store you purchased the lens at has the ability to do a calibration.

As for the 50mm, I stated that it does not exhibit any front focus issues.

I've got the D40 and Tamron 17-50mm like you have. Mine seems to be in the same situation as yours. I want to know whether there is a way to solve this problem without changing to another one.
One more thing, as you said on the other entry, you're using D40 and cannot autofocus on 50 f/1.8. So how comes can the 50 exhibit the same issue.
